Merry Christmas from the Marketing Wizard’s Alliance

By Katie Langston · Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

It’s been a heckuva year.

Recession worries, massive political change, and the ups and downs of running and growing your own business.

If you’re like me, you get to the end of the year tired…reflective…and optimistic about what the future holds.

And that’s what I love best about the holidays.

For the next few days, we can forget the turbulence of economic uncertainty and remember why we do it in the first place. We can spend time enjoying our family and friends.  We can set aside our differences and focus instead on our commonalities.

Of course, the battle will still be waiting for us when we return.  But hopefully we’ll be refreshed, renewed, and ready to take the action we know we need to in order to create the businesses and lives we’re striving for.

Until then, why don’t you spend a few minutes reflecting with us?  What have you learned this year?  What are your most important goals for the new year?  Drop us a note in the comments and we’ll all learn from each other!

Merry Christmas!

One of the most important things I’ve learned this year is to fail fast. I noticed myself being afraid to make sure decisions because I was afraid it things wouldn’t work. But if even if something doesn’t work, that is incredibly valuable information; information I need on my way to success!

I’ve learned to trust my gut. And to let the universe know what I want to accomplish. It’s been amazing to watch those things come about just by asking for them.

People may disappoint, but principles endure. The seeds of triumph can always be found in the ashes of failure. God is in command.

I’ve learned to prepare for all contingencies, especially the unpleasant ones. Things can only be better than expected, as expected or worse than expected. Preparing for the first two is usually comparatively easy and fun. Preparing for the last one isn’t so much fun, but it is more imperative. At the end of the day, lack of preparation can sink the ship.

I’ve learned more than ever to be open to new ideas and to test, test, test and track, track, track everything our company does. 2009 will be a year of incredible challenges for retailers like me, but also a year of incredible opportunity for those who will seek it!

Great topic Katie! I look back and realize how much business I gained (and lost) through referals. It is so important to ask for and act on referals from EVERYONE you deal with. Many a time I ran into people who we’re not ” a good fit” for my service. Because I still treated them with respect and offered value, they almost always came up with “someone I should talk to”. Guess what else, your customer acquisition cost is about zero! Here’s to using more referals in 2009!
